Café Notes

Itch.io page

Sometime last year, I decided I wanted an app that would let me practice the names of the notes in a sheet music, so I could improve even on days when I didn't have the energy to play the piano. But when I searched on the play store, all I found was ad-riddled apps, ugly flat design, and always, ALWAYS the taglines "contains ads - in app purchases".

So I thought, "I'm gonna make one, and it's not gonna have any of that."

And now, here it is! Café Notes, lovingly made by hand in Godot. Currently it works pretty well for me, which was the main goal, but I think it could also be useful to other people, so I'm planning to publish it.

It has been a pretty fun process to make it, and I quite like the result. I think a big part of why I liked doing it is that I don't have any expectation or need for it to be bigger than that. I don't count on it to make money, so any other person playing it and enjoying it would already be a great thing.

That said, in the off chance that multiple people like it, I do plan to make a "full version" at some point, that would cost something like $1, and include a few goodies. But I do want the demo to keep being free, and to keep being a full game by itself.

I encountered just one issue: it turns out that to "protect users agains malicious parties", google decided that it would be a good idea to publicly show your full name and address. So, not much trouble for big companies, but complete exposure to malicious parties, crawlers and spam mongers for small devs working from home. Yay! So in the end, since I am not willing to dox myself just to share a little game, it's not gonna be on the app store, it's gonna be on itch.io.
